How Does An Artist Know When a Painting is Done?

How do I know when a painting is done?  This is the most common question I am asked.  It is also very difficult to answer.  To answer this I also need to touch on how do I get started?
The most challenging thing for me as an artist is to describe my process of creating a painting, as it is such an internal and methodical act.

I most always know the color palate I will use, although I often add new colors as I see the painting evolve.

Painting for me is a process of many layers of paint and mixed media, which change as I add color and markings to the canvas. I sometimes have an idea of the final product, but this can change as I add new layers.  I like to cover up areas of already dried paint layers and also scrape away wet paint to reveal a previous layer.

I find a painting to be most interesting when it has many textures and layers.

At this stage, there are no mistakes.  I can always turn an unplanned drip of paint into an interesting part of the painting. I can cover it up or make it work within the layers.

As I get further along with the painting, I become more careful with my marks and where I add my medium.

Every mark I add at this point effects another area of the painting.
A major part of the overall aesthetic of the painting, for me, is balance. If I add a mark to one area when the painting is in it's last stage, I may need to add another mark somewhere else on the piece...and maybe another.
At this stage I do a lot of standing back from the painting and observing it overall.

I know the painting is done, when I feel- that if I add one more mark it could change the whole look.  It is done when I feel there is nothing else to add.

Sometimes I have made the mistake of adding a new element to a painting I thought was finished. This turned into hours more of working on the painting to balance it and make these new marks work within the whole piece.

I love seeing the stages of a painting.
Here is a painting I recently created in different stages.

Adding base color.

Some mixed media application.

More paint, mixed media, and covering of layers.

Adding markings and more mixed media to the top dried layer. I look for balance of the painting and observe if it is has a feeling of wholeness.

I hope this helps to answer the question of - How does an artist know a painting is done?

Look in my studio and more art!

Where:  Salado Wine Seller, 841 N.
 Main St., Salado, TX 76571

Join us on Saturday, January 24th from 5-8 pm, when Christy Tremblay will be on hand to discuss her art show “A Painted House a Day“.  Ms. Tremblay, a mixed media artist,  was selected for the next exhibition at the winery due to her unique perspective on military life.

Christy just completed an art challenge, A Painted House A Day. Her goal was to create with paint and mixed media one house image a day, for 183 days. She completed 183 Painted Houses from March 2014 to September 2014.
A Northwest native, Christy has taught in Korea and visited cities, rural areas and islands in Southeast Asia. She started using the imagery of houses in her art about four years ago when she and her family were living on Fort Bliss in El Paso, TX. They had a historical Bungalow with a lot of charm.  She says, " Growing up I had two houses I called 'home.' As an adult and with a family of my own, I have had many houses to make a home. My husband is Active Duty Army and we move often.  Although a move comes with work and saying
goodbyes, we embrace each move and look forward to our new adventures, people to meet, and places to explore. Houses are houses. A home is for a family to create safety, love, and memories. As I make each move with my two daughters and husband, I find our locations and houses to change, but our home stays the same.”

The Salado Winery gallery will be filled with Ms. Tremblay's artwork, which will be available for sale throughout the spring.  Wines produced on the premise will be available for savoring as folks view and purchase these local art treasures.

Mixed Media Paintings - My Favorite Painted Houses!

Hi there! Thanks for stopping by.

As I have finished ALL 183 painted houses I wanted to share my favorites...which is tough because I really love them all.  But I do have some that I am drawn to more then others.

This is why art is so wonderful, that it can mean something different to each of us and bring out different emotions and memories for each person.

Here are some of my favorite painted houses and my story behind a Painted House A Day...for those of you who are new to my blog, A Painted House A Day.

Here is a little history on the subject matter of "Houses" and why they are such a meaningful image in my life:
I lived in the same house since I was two years old, after moving across country from Tampa, Florida to Seattle, WA. I was raised in the same house since I was two and my parents still live in that house, in Washington State.
I moved away for college to Northern Arizona and also lived in Korea to teach English after college. I always had the travel bug!

I often went back to my home in Washington between my college and adventures in traveling.
To me a house is security, happiness, and home.

Now I move every one to two years, my husband is in the Army and we get to live in many places and houses.

I started using the imagery of a house in my art about four years ago when we were living on Fort Bliss in Elpaso, TX. We had a historical Bungalow with a lot of charm. www.elpaso.about.com/.../FortBlissTour_3.htm

I always wondered about all of the different military families who had occupied the house before us.  Where were they from? Where did they consider home?  How many children did they have?

I wrote the following short story and added it to the back of a series of paintings I created called, "Home Again."

" Growing up I had two houses I called "home."
As an adult and with a family of my own, I have had many houses to make a home.
My husband is Active Duty Army and we move a lot!
Although a move comes with work and saying goodbyes, we embrace each move and look forward to our new adventures, people to meet, and places to explore.
Houses are houses. A home is for a family to create safety, love, and memories.
As I make each move with my two daughters and husband, I find our locations and houses to change, but our home stays the same.

Have a great day!

Christy

Ready to Hang

This is my most recent, completed painting.  It is textured and has many different mediums, paper, and paints.  The colors remind me of fall.

I like to record the process from start to finish...my painting process is not always planned and evolves through each layer of paint and medium.
